Lesser Whistling-duck

Scientific Name: Dendrocygna javanica
Common Name: Lesser Whistling-duck
Other Names: Indian whistling duck, lesser whistling teal, sili, silhahi 

Identifying Features: Brown and long neck, chestnut upper-tail coverts, ring around the eye is orange to yellow.

Fun Facts:

  • They are very nocturnal and often rest during the day.
  • They produce very prominent whistling sound while flying.
  • Hunters in Assam have been known to raise the ducklings to serve as live decoy.
