Black-crowned Night Heron

Scientific Name: Nycticorax nycticorax
Common Name: Black-crowned Night Heron
Other Name: Black-capped night heron, Night heron

Identifying Features: red eyes, short yellow legs, black cap, black back, greyish-white body, black bill, pale grey wings

Fun Facts:

  • A colony of the herons has regularly summered at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. for more than a century.
  • It is observed to engage in bait fishing i.e. luring or distracting fish by tossing edible or inedible buoyant objects into water within their striking range
