Oriental Pratincole

 

Scientific Name: Glareola maldivarum
Common Name: Oriental Pratincole
Other Name: Grasshopper-bird, Swallow-plover

Identifying Features: brown body, short legs, whitish belly, a light patch on neck bordered with black, black beak with red base

Fun Facts:

  • An unusual feature of all pratincoles is that although classed as waders they typically hunt their insect prey on the wing like swallows, although they can also feed on the ground.
  • They are migratory, wintering in both India and Pakistan, Indonesia and Australasia.
