Common Name: Lesser Sand Plover, Tibetan Sand Plover, Siberian Sand Plover

 

Lesser Sand Plover has had recent taxonomic change; the Lesser Sand Plover Species complex now includes Siberian Sand Plover (Anarhynchus mongolus) or Tibetan Sand Plover (Anarhynchus atrifrons)

Identifying Features: black legs, white neck, orange-brown breast, white belly, brown upper parts

Fun Facts:

  • Breeds above the tree line in the Himalayas and discontinuously across to bare coastal plains in north-eastern Siberia.
  • The lesser sand plover’s feeds on insects, crustaceans and annelid worms, which are obtained by a run-and-pause technique.
