Identifying Features: Males with elongated central tail feathers, females short-tailed, rufous wings, black head, black crown and crest, white underparts, black bill

Fun Facts:

  • This bird is mentioned in Satyajit Ray created detective-sleuth Feluda’s 2 stories Chinnamastar Abhishap and Jahangirer Swarnamudra.
  • Being socially monogamous, both male and female take part in nest-building, incubation, brooding and feeding of the young.
