Fork-tailed Swift

Scientific Name: Apus pacificus
Common Name: Fork-tailed Swift
Other Name: Pacific Swift

Identifying Features: black body, presence of a white band, forked tail,  greyer head, underwings are brown

Fun Facts:

  • When the parents cannot find sufficient food in bad weather, the young can survive for days without being fed by metabolising body fat.
  • The Pacific swift is a colonial species which nests in sheltered locations such as caves, crevices in vertical rock faces (including sea-cliffs), or under the eaves of houses.
  • Swifts spend most of their time in flight.
