Ferruginous Pochard

Scientific Name: Aythya nyroca
Common Name: Ferruginous Pochard
Other Name: Ferruginous duck, Common white-eye or White-eyed pochard

Identifying Features: Dark reddish brown head, white belly, long grey bill, females have a dark eye.

Fun Facts:

  • These are gregarious birds.
  • They eat aquatic plants with some molluscs, aquatic insects and small fish. They often feed at night, and will upend (dabble) for food as well as the more characteristic diving.
